Santiago Calatrava
Born in Valencia, Spain in 1951, Calatrava studied architecture and engineering from years 1969-1979 in various universities. In 1891 he established his architectural and engineering firm in Zurich, Switzerland.
Calatrava is a modern thinker, a genius in terms of architectural and engineering designs. His creations resemble that of outer space sea monsters or otherwise, intricate twisting buildings and bridges. Using various elements of design, Calatrava creates these almost surreal forms that are aesthetically pleasing to the eye.
For example, the Ciudad de las Artes y de las Ciencias building located in Valencia, Spain. It was cleverly designed and shaped to look like half an eye, so that when the light of dusk came around and the lights illuminated it, the building would reflect on the water, thus forming the shape of an eye.
Another example would be, Lyon-Saint Exupery Airport Railway Station located in Satolas, Lyon France. Personally, it reminds me of a Transformer coming up from the depths of the ground, shining brilliantly with multi-colored lights. Or the Palau de las Artesm located in Valencia, Spain. It’s like looking at a metal shark-like species emerging from the water.
Not only did it paid off to study for 10 years in universities, Calatrava completely mastered his craftsmanship. He is creating buildings we can only imagine seeing in the not so distant future.
